On Wednesday 6th November, the West Leigh Basketball team travelled to Thorpe Hall School to compete in their round of the Southend Basketball Tournament. The team was made up of six boys and four girls and they played two games against Bournes Green and Hamstel. Each game was twenty minutes with each half lasting ten minutes.

Yesterday 8 boys and 4 girls from years 5 and 6 entered the the Tag Rugby B competition at Southend Rugby club. We hadn’t played together as a team before and this was a great learning curve for us. In our first game we played Hamstel A team and unfortunately lost 8-4. We re-grouped and played St.Michael's A team and won 10-9. We then went on to play Greenways and won 12-6. With the ground becoming very muddy our final game was against Prince Avenue which we just lost 10-8. T
The Year 5 and 6 girls' football team competed in the Southend Primary School Sports Association Girls' Football Competition on Friday 18th October 2019. The day started off with the group stage where the girls got off to a great start by winning the first match. The team then faced two very tough matches managing to win their second match and followed that up with a draw in the last match of their group.

On Wednesday 2nd October, West Leigh took 46 children from across the school to take part in the Southend Primary School Sports Association Cross Country Tournament. The children were running in teams as well as individuals. Each year group had their own race split into a girls’ race and a boys’ race, with year 3 and 4 running 1km and year 5 and 6 running 1.5km. Once again, West Leigh has excelled in the Southend Yr 5/6 Tag Rugby Finals continuing the school’s magnificent record!
During the course the tournament, they played 10 games and impressively won all 10 ultimately being crowned champions.

On Friday 11th October, the children donated a variety of tinned and packet foods to our harvest collection which was gratefully received by Southend Foodbank. After learning how foodbanks operate and how they support the local community, the children were keen to make a difference and gave generously and the representative from our local foodbank was overwhelmed by their generosity. On Friday 11th October, eight of our girls from the school football team travelled to the Len Forge Centre to compete in the Southend Primary School Sports Association Emerging Girls Football Tournament. They had the opportunity to play eight competitive matches against seven other schools. For most of them, it was their first time playing a competitive match outside of school training sessions.

On Wednesday 25th September, 120 Year 5 children arrived at school with a mass of suitcases and were full of excitement ready for their 3 day residential at Danbury. The day started with a few fun activities in their classes before the coaches arrived and were loaded up ready for the short 30 minute journey up to Danbury. Once we arrived, the children were sorted into their tents and then gathered together for lunch before their first of two activities.

On Wednesday 25th Sept, once the Danbury children had gone, we walked to Belfairs Woods. Mrs Atkin provided a range of challenges for the children, including finding the ‘best souvenir of the day’. The children all had fun collecting the various items on Mrs Atkin’s list. They enjoyed playing on the wooden play equipment too.
