WEST LEIGH JUNIOR SCHOOL
SMSC
At West Leigh Junior School, we recognise that pupils’ personal development is just as important as their academic success. Promoting Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural (SMSC) development is central to our school ethos and underpins everything we do, both across the curriculum and beyond.
Through high-quality teaching and learning, pupils are encouraged to reflect, ask questions, develop a strong sense of right and wrong and understand their role within the school, the local community and the wider world. SMSC is thoughtfully embedded across all subjects, providing meaningful opportunities for discussion, collaboration, reflection and respect for others’ views. This supports our children in developing confidence, resilience, empathy and self-awareness, contributing to positive attitudes to learning and behaviour.
Beyond the classroom, SMSC is promoted through assemblies, leadership roles, enrichment activities, educational visits and strong relationships across the school community. Children are encouraged to take responsibility, work cooperatively and develop positive relationships. We place a strong emphasis on mutual respect, tolerance and understanding of diversity.
Our inclusive approach to SMSC supports personal development, behaviour and attitudes and safeguarding, ensuring children feel safe, valued and supported. By providing rich opportunities for spiritual reflection, moral decision-making, social interaction and cultural understanding, we help children to be well-prepared for the next stage of their education and for life in modern Britain.
Below you will see our overview which clearly shows the carefully planned opportunities for SMSC across our school curriculum and beyond.
