WEST LEIGH JUNIOR SCHOOL
HEALTH & SAFETY
Martyn’s Law is new UK legislation aimed at improving safety and preparedness in public places, including schools, in the event of a terrorist attack. It was named in memory of Martyn Hett, a victim of the 2017 Manchester Arena attack.
As a result, we have reviewed our lockdown procedures in order to comply with the requirements. This can be viewed below.
We understand that practising lockdown drills with children could be unsettling and potentially frightening. For this reason, we have chosen not to conduct live drills with pupils. Instead, our staff are fully trained and confident in the procedures, ensuring they know exactly what to do in the unlikely event of a lockdown.
However, it is important that children are aware of what to do if they hear the lockdown signal. To support this, we have created a child-friendly video that gently explains the steps they should follow in a calm, reassuring (and hopefully entertaining!) way. This helps ensure they feel informed and safe, without causing unnecessary worry.
