
Yr 5/6 Tag Rugby B Competition
Yesterday 8 boys and 4 girls from years 5 and 6 entered the the Tag Rugby B competition at Southend Rugby club. We hadn’t played together as a team before and this was a great learning curve for us. In our first game we played Hamstel A team and unfortunately lost 8-4. We re-grouped and played St.Michael's A team and won 10-9. We then went on to play Greenways and won 12-6. With the ground becoming very muddy our final game was against Prince Avenue which we just lost 10-8. T

Essex Plate Competition
Following on from the success of the year 5 and 6 tennis team, earlier this year, four pupils from year 5 took part in the ‘Essex Tennis – Plate Competition’ at Garon Park, on Tuesday 25th June. Charlie and Olly again demonstrated some excellent tennis and match play skills. Table tennis competition
On Wednesday 26th September, 8 pupils from West Leigh Junior School took part in the Southend Primary Schools Sports Association ‘table tennis’ competition. In the morning, the boys performed extremely well, often battling back to win games that seemed lost. The boys battled against some incredibly strong competition, winning 5 of their 8 matches , which placed them in a creditable 4th position. The afternoon saw the girls in action. Netball League
Before we broke up for the half term our Year 6 girls played two league games. The first was against Chalkwell on Thursday 25th January where we won 5-0 after waiting for the rain to stop, and then Head of Chalkwell School sweeping the puddles off the court. Sport Hall Athletics
On Wednesday 31st January West Leigh competed in both the Year 3/4 and 5/6 Sportshall Athletics at Garons Tennis and Leisure Centre. The day was split into 2 parts with Years 5 and 6 competing in the morning and Years 3 and 4 competing in the afternoon. With each competition consisting of 6 track events and 6 field events, each athlete is also only allowed to compete in a maximum of two track and two field events. Super Sports track and field
On Tuesday, 7 of our 8 relay teams and 9 of our individual runners entered the Super sports (track) event at Garon Park. We were competing against the best 8 schools in the borough. Our Year 4, 5 and 6 girls finished 4th. Year 3 and 6 boys came 3rd and our Year 4 and 5 boys won their relay races in excellent times. Boys' and Girls' cricket competition
On Monday, nine Year 6 boys played in the boys' cricket competition at Garon park. There were 15 schools involved. We started quite nervously and played Blenheim school and narrowly lost by 11 runs. We then played Fairways school (they finished 3rd overall) and unfortunately lost. The standard this year was extremely high!

Quick sticks hockey Essex finals
Wow, what a week of sport we have had! On Wednesday, six Year 6 children were invited to play in the quick sticks hockey Essex finals held at Chelmsford Hockey Club. There were 22 schools present, it was extremely hot and we were the only school representing Southend. In the morning we played schools called Barnes Farm, Cathedral, Mildmay B, Westlands and Moulsham. We didn't lose a single game and we finished top of our group.

The Year 5 and 6 football team competed in the Southend Primary School Sports Association Boys’ Football Competition on Wednesday 2nd November 2016. The group stage got off to a tense start with all five teams finishing their first game 0-0; the boys had a number of shots at the goal but were unable to hit the back of the net. In the second game after going 0-1 down the boys pushed even harder to get the win with final result being 2-1. This boosted the confidence and energy

Tag rugby
On Wednesday 13th October, 12 children from year 5 and 6 attended the Southend Tag Rugby Finals. Year on year, this competition sees a rise is the standards of the teams and this year was no different. Although the team lost 4-3 in the final, they played remarkably and have qualified for the Essex Finals in March.
