Year 5 Residential Trip to Mersea
On Wednesday 9th September, 108 Year 5 children arrived at school loaded with suitcases and bursting with excitement, ready for their three-day residential trip to Mersea. The day began with some fun activities in their classrooms before the coaches arrived and were loaded up for the journey.
Upon arrival at Mersea, everyone gathered for a picnic lunch on the field before being organised into their tents and preparing for their first activities. Some children bravely navigated the dark tunnels of the caving simulator, while others conquered the dizzying heights of the high ropes course.
After an action-packed afternoon, the children enjoyed a delicious dinner before returning to their tents to finish unpacking and spend some time playing on the field. Later, everyone took part in a lively game of sitting volleyball in an effort to use up some of their remaining energy before bedtime. By the end of the evening, both the children and most of the staff were ready for a good night's sleep. The children settled into their tents full of anticipation for the next day's adventures, and after a few excited conversations, the campsite finally fell quiet.
As the sun rose on Thursday morning, the children awoke with their own enthusiastic version of the dawn chorus! Following breakfast, they were full of energy and ready for another day of exciting challenges. Some children took to the water in kayaks, learning how to paddle and steer through a series of team games, while others developed their teamwork skills on the adventure course.
After refuelling with a hearty lunch, the children headed off for two more activities. Some scaled the climbing wall, overcoming fears and pushing themselves to new heights, while others enjoyed the paddleboarding on the lake. Following another tasty dinner and some free time on the field, everyone gathered in the dining hall for Mersea Island Quiz Night. Thechildren worked together in their groups to answer a range of questions, testing their knowledge, memory and pure guesswork. There was plenty of excitement as teams celebrated correct answers and eagerly debated some of the trickier questions. The friendly competition brought lots of laughter and enthusiasm, with children encouraging one another throughout the evening. While enjoying hot chocolate and biscuits, the children had the opportunity to relax, reflect on the day's adventures and spend time with friends. The quiz night was a fantastic way to end another busy day and created many happy memories before heading off to bed. Exhausted after a day full of activities, the campsite became quiet much earlier that evening.
Friday morning arrived a little more slowly as the camp began to wake. After breakfast, the children enjoyed their final activities. Some put their mathematical skills to use while aiming for the highest scores in archery, while others completed their last challenges around the site.
The whole group then came together for the final activity, It's a Knockout, where teams competed against one another in a variety of inflatable obstacle courses and challenges. Points were awarded not only for performance but also for teamwork, cooperation and enthusiasm. After one final meal together, it was time to load the coaches, say goodbye to Mersea and return to school, feeling proud, accomplished and, understandably, a little tired.
Over the three days at Mersea, all 108 children demonstrated remarkable determination, resilience and a willingness to embrace new experiences. Throughout the activities, they developed their teamwork, communication and problem-solving skills while encouraging and supporting one another. The staff were incredibly proud to see the children flourish outdoors, face their fears and persevere when challenges became difficult, particularly during the high-adrenaline activities.
It was also wonderful to see new friendships form and existing ones grow stronger. The trip was a memorable experience for everyone involved and one that the children are sure to remember for years to come.
