KS 2 Southend and District Tennis Tournament

On Friday 10th May, eight pupils took part in the ‘Southend and District Tennis Tournament’ at Garon Park. In the morning session, a team of four children from years 3 and 4 were in action. The children played extremely well and showed great determination. The first match finished with a 3-1 win, the second a 1-3 loss and the final game was a 2-2 draw. On a count back of points, West Leigh finished one point behind the second position team and thus just missed a place in the semi-finals. In the afternoon, the year 5/6 team were in action. They made a strong start by winning all of their group matches. In the semi-final match they achieved a 2- 2 draw but progressed to the final on points gained across the four games. The final was an extremely close and exciting affair. West Leigh won one game 7 5 but lost three games 5 7, 6 7 and 6 7. It could hardly have been closer! The pupils were delighted with their silver medals and their qualification to the Essex Finals, which will be held in June. Congratulations to all the players from West Leigh for their excellent tennis skills and great sportsmanship and thank you coach Graham and the large number of spectators for their support throughout the day.
