SPSSA Tennis Competition

On Friday 13th May, eight pupils took part in the Southend Primary School Sports Association tennis competition at Garon Park.

In the morning session, a team of four children from Years 3 and 4 were in action. Some of the games were long and our players demonstrated great resilience and perseverance, winning 14 of their 16 games in the ‘round robin’ stage. This meant we finished top of the group. In the semi-final match they beat Leigh North Street. The winning run continued in the final matches with victory over Thorpe Hall. The pupils were absolutely delighted with the result and winning trophy.

In the afternoon, the year 5/6 team was in action. The four pupils made a strong start by winning all of their matches in the ‘round robin’ stage and finished top of the group. In the semi-final, they achieved a win over Thorpe Hall. The final was against Chalkwell Hall and, once again, the team were successful. All four pupils were overjoyed with their achievement. As in the morning, some of the games were challenging, but the children showed great spirit and determination.

In addition to demonstrating super tennis skills, all the children were incredibly supportive of each other. Furthermore, they were great ambassadors for West Leigh with regards to their sportsmanship and behaviour whilst at the competition.

The children and their supporters enjoyed a great day of tennis and we should all be proud of the results, not just for winning both trophies on the day but for how well they represented the school.

Well done to both teams!
