The Year 5 and 6 girls' football team competed in the Southend Primary School Sports Association Girls' Football Competition on Friday 13th October 2017. The girls got off to a great start to the day in the group stage, winning all 4 games to put them top of the group and through to the super 10s. West Leigh 2-0 Thorpedene West Leigh 1-0 Our Lady Of Lords West Leigh 1-0 Sacred Heart West Leigh 1-0 Bournes Green After lunch the girls played another 4 games. Continuing their form with a 3-0 win. The next game the girls went 0-1 down to Temple Sutton, but manage to stay calm and focused to bring it back to a 2-1 victory. The third game also challenged the girls after going 0-1 down to Heycroft in the first half, they stayed positive and started the second half with lots of energy to finish the game 1-1. In the fourth game the girls put in all their effort to score a goal but were unable to get the ball into the net with the game finishing 0-0. With two wins and two draws the girls had done enough to get through to the semifinals, but had to wait for the last game to be played to find out if they finished top of the group as Heycroft had won one and drawn two, another win would put them on equal points. With Heycroft winning their final game 3-0, the girls went through as runners up on goal difference. West Leigh 3-0 Bournmouth Park West Leigh 2-1 Temple Sutton West Leigh 1-1 Heycroft West Leigh 0-0 Chalkwell In the semifinal game, against Westborough, the girls went 0-1 down in the first half but put in all their effort to bring it back to 1-1 in the second half, sending the game into extra time. Playing two minutes each way, the girls continued to push managing to get a second goal 30 seconds from the final whistle, securing them a place in the final with a 2-1 win. West Leigh 2-1 Westborough In the final the girls played Heycroft once again. With great defensive and attacking play throughout the game from both teams, with 8 minutes played the whistle was blown with the score 0-0 which meant extra time was needed once again. The 4 minutes was up and the score still 0-0, both coaches were given the option go to penalties or play golden goal with a 10 minute limit. Choosing to play golden goal both teams continued to push, providing great football. The final whistle was blown once again and after a total of 22 minutes of fantastic football the score was still 0-0, the game was brought to penalties. Heycroft were first to step up to take a penalty, they strike the ball, saved by the keeper. We step up for our first penalty, the ball hits the back of the net. Second penalty from both Heycroft and West Leigh was saved. Heycroft step up for their third and final, the ball is kicked looking on target for the bottom left and it bounces off the post. The game ending in a 1-0 win for West Leigh. West Leigh 1-0 Heycroft (on penalties) The girls put in an incredible performance throughout the day with superb sportsmanship and behaviour. Along with an incredible job winning the tournament for the first time for the school and now will go on to represent Southend at the Essex Finals.
