Red Nose Day - Class jokes & Lip Sync

Throughout the last two weeks, schools from across Essex have been taking part in the South East Essex Design Competition. This annual contest has been a showcase of outstanding art and D&T work which children have completed as a part of their learning. This year, West Leigh entered the competition with work from all four year groups – Alice in Wonderland Tea Cups, Roman Shields, Mysterious Meso-American Truffles and Cam Toys. Mr Loveridge organised the event and was incredibly impressed with the quality of work producing which in some case surpassed the efforts from the previous year. On Thursday 23rd March, two children from each year group represented the school for judging and were excep

Line Rocket Car competition

On Wednesday 15th March, Mr Loveridge was accompanied by his D&T Club in the Bloodhound Race for the Line Rocket Car competition. The 12 children had been working together in teams of 3 to create a rocket powered car with one goal – to travel as quickly as possible! Each team worked incredibly hard across a three week design and production period and thoroughly enjoyed their trip to Basildon to race their creations. The cars performed incredibly well on the day but sadly were not fast enough to place in a position which qualifies them for the national final. The cars will be used in next year’s D&T Club to build upon and improve the existing designs to make them faster for next year. 1) Ru

Rock Steady Assembly

In assembly on Monday 20th March, we were visited by Rachel from Rock Steady. Rachel demonstrated the different types of instruments that make up a band. The children were asked the names of the instruments and also the names of the songs that were played. Rachel played the electric guitar, bass guitar, electric drum kit and keyboard, then the most important part of any band, the singer. The children and staff were encouraged to sing along if they knew the song. The children really enjoyed this experience. #Year4 #Year6 #Year3 #Wholeschool #Year5

Year 6 Dog's Trust

On Monday 13th March, Year 6 were visited by Maria from The Dog’s Trust. She delivered a presentation and workshop to each class about how dogs went from being wild animals to pets, and also reminded the children about how to stay safe around dogs and the key things you must do to look after a dog. They looked at how dogs originated from wolves and how they started to interact with humans. The children then did an activity to see how much DNA different breeds of dogs have in common with wolves. The children then covered the importance of brushing dog’s fur, the correct amount of food, and the correct amount of exercise they need each day as well as health check-ups and treatments. #Year6 #wh

Year 6 watch Ghost: the musical at WHSG

Yesterday, Year 6 were fortunate to attend a performance of Westcliff High School for Girls' production of Ghost: the musical'. They thoroughly enjoyed the show and found many different elements of it engaging from the superb live band to the spectacular theatrical moments. It was also wonderful to see several past pupils performing wonderfully on stage, in the band, and also in supporting roles as prefects. Our pupils behaved incredibly well during the performance and helped to make the trip a highly pleasant experience all round.

Dog's Trust visit

Today, Year 5 were visited by Maria from The Dog’s Trust. She delivered a presentation and workshop to each class about the importance of rights and responsibilities. This links closely to the PSHE taught in Year 5. Children learned the importance of respecting rights, not just of humans but of animals too. They learned about the five freedoms that all dogs require, and thought carefully about the consequences if these were not followed. It made the children think very carefully about the responsibility of looking after a dog and the effects that their actions can have. Maria will also be visiting Years 4 and 6 over the next couple of weeks. #year5 #Wholeschool

Bhangra workshop

As part of the Equality and Diversity project taking place at West Leigh Junior School, pupils in Years 3 and 4 were visited by Indi Sandhu from SportArts4All, who taught them about Bhangra dance and music. Children enjoyed an interactive workshop where they were able to wear traditional Indian dress, learn some key dance moves and learn a little more about Indian culture. The children and staff had a brilliant day - the staff have even requested their own workshop in the future! #Year4 #Year3 #Wholeschool

Ability Action workshops

Today, Year 5 were visited by Claire and Peter from Ability Action. They delivered a very interesting assembly about disability to the whole year group, encouraging children to change their perceptions and consider how disabilities affect people’s lives. Both Claire and Peter commented on the sensible and perceptive questions asked by the children in our school. Following the assembly, our playground squad then took part in a workshop with Peter and Claire, where they learned how to be inclusive and consider how they can help make our playground an even happier place. #year5 #wholeschool
