On Thursday 3rd July, 112 Year 3 children arrived at school with a mass of suitcases and were full of excitement ready for their 2 day residential at Danbury. The day started with a few fun activities in their classes before the coaches arrived and were loaded up ready for the short 30 minute journey up to Danbury. Once we arrived, the children enjoyed a picnic lunch on the field before getting their tents sorted ahead of their first of two activities.
Some children concurred the knee wobbling heights of the aerial trekking, some learnt the art of lighting fires in bush craft and some children zoomed along the zip wire. After using lots of energy, the children tucked into a very tasty dinner of sausages and mash. The Children then had some time to finish sorting out their tents and play on the field. As the evening drew in, we gathered on the field for our evening activities, where the children competed in their activity groups in a number of mini games involving, balancing a bean bag on their head while hoping between cones, passing a bean bag over their heads and between their legs followed by large group games of sharks and fishes and the very popular station game. After the evening activities, the children and some of the staff were ready for their beds. The children all settled into their tents full of excitement for the next day’s activities and eventually the camp was quiet.
Friday morning, the camp woke nice and early with the sunrise! After breakfast, the children were greeted by their instructors for two more thrilling activities. Some children worked on their accuracy and maths at archery, whereas others worked on their team work skills on the obstacle course and a few navigated their way around the dark tunnels of caving. The children then refuelled with a hearty lunch before getting their bags loaded back onto the coaches and heading back to school – incredibly tired!
Over the two days they spent at Danbury, all 112 children showed great determination, acceptance of adventure and great improvement with team work throughout all the activities they took part in. All the staff were extremely proud to see the children thrive in the outdoors, tackle their fears and improve on every attempt with every challenge they faced, especially on the high activities. It was also encouraging to see the children build friendships amongst their peers.
