Year 5 Poetry presentations

Year 5 have been studying poetry during recent English lessons, learning about a range of poetic devices and how to apply these to their own poems. The children went on to learn a variety of poems by heart which were then performed to parents on Thursday 17th November. We were extremely proud of the children’s efforts and congratulate them on the outstanding results! 5B - Albert and the Lion 5J - Dead Poet Arise 5C - Three Little Pigs 5Q - Macavity #Year5 #wholeschool

Bullybeats workshop

On Monday, Children from each class worked together to explore themes around friendship and bullying to produce a school anthem about bullying called 'Bully Free'. The children worked in groups to write the lyrics, melody and a rap. The workshop was delivered by Nathan Timothy from 'Bullybeats' in association with Southend Borough Council's 'Equality and Diversity Champions' programme. The children enjoyed themselves and learned a lot about the technical side of music production. Their lyrics really demonstrate their views about bullying and its effects. We will now be sharing this song with the whole school and exploring its themes during anti bullying week. #wholeschool #year3 #Year4 #Ye

Boys' Choir at St. Paul's Church, Covent Garden

On Saturday 19th November, members of the Boys' Choir had the opportunity to perform at the delightful "Actors' Church" at Covent Garden. The Choir sang six songs to a packed and enthusiastic audience. It was the first performance for the Year 3 members of the choir and the boys were both nervous and excited, Mrs. Walker was very proud of the choir. The boys performed to high standard and their programme was well received. It was a lovely opportunity for choir members to watch other choral and solo contributions. The boys particularly enjoyed the performance by the Chamber Choir at St Bernard's High School and the excellent recorder playing of Josephine Rapley-Mende, one of our talented for

Southend Music Festival

Young musicians from West Leigh Junior School performed at the Southend Music Festival yesterday. Children from Years 4, 5 and 6 performed a diverse collection of solos, duets and ensemble pieces. Some children were presenting individual entries for the first time so this was a particularly significant achievement. We were treated to a journey through musical history as the programme covered music by Bach and Purcell, themes from ‘Mary Poppins’ and ‘Chitty Chitty Bang Bang’ as well as contemporary music written this year. In addition to experiencing a professional performance platform, the children were given constructive feedback from a guest adjudicator. They received very positive comment

National Science Inter-School Quiz

On Friday, West Leigh Junior School took part in the National Science Inter-School Quiz Championship at Westlands Community Primary School in Chelmsford. Our team were quizzed on a wide range of topics (none of which were part of their school science curriculum) from dinosaurs to blood groups and cloud types. Their demonstration of knowledge was truly astounding and they did themselves and the school proud. Unfortunately their final score saw them narrowly miss out on a place in the next round. A huge 'Well done!' to the team nevertheless and many thanks to the parents and carers who took the children to the event and supported them throughout. #Year5 #Year6 #wholeschool

Team Challenge morning

On Friday 11th November, the whole school once again split into their teams to work on a set challenge. This term, the challenge was to create a promotion for their team, to let everyone else know just how fantastic they are! The creativity demonstrated across the school was amazing, and we saw dances, songs, videos, raps and more! Children really considered the qualities of a good team member, as well as researching the historical figure that their team is named after. As usual the children had a brilliant time and really enjoyed working with different children from across the school. This week the children will have house team assemblies where they share their creations, and vote on one

Enhanced Healthy Schools Ceremony

On Friday, Mrs Atkin, Mrs Rodger and 4 year 6 girls attended the Enhanced Healthy Schools Ceremony at the Tickfield Centre. The girls did their presentation beautifully and received the plaque and certificate on behalf of the school. The school achieved the award because of the healthy eating changes we have put into place, our thriving tuck shop and the improvements we have put into place during lunchtimes, such as the use of the climbing wall, lunchtime clubs and our effective playground squad. Everyone in the school has contributed to this and we are very proud. #year3 #Year4 #Year5 #Year6 #wholeschool

Year 3 become time travellers

Year 3 are now officially certified time travellers after their presentation by The Freshwater Theatre Company. Their excellent spelling and caption skills aided a trainee time traveller to gain her qualification on the 10th time of trying, for which she was very grateful. Aside from time travelling, the children enhanced their learning about Ancient Greece which they have been studying in their Connected Curriculum lessons. The children met Jocasta, a woman from Ancient Greece and her Spartan Slave Griselda. There was also a surprise visit from Zeus which we only just survived. The children found out about the Greek alphabet, the writings of Homer, battles and also the legacy of Ancie

Year 4 visit Colchester Castle

Year Four enjoyed the winter sunshine in Camulodunum (Colchester) on November 2nd as they travelled back in time around 2000 years to learn all about the lives of others in Roman Britain. Colchester Castle Museum provides an excellent hands on experience, and the children not only got to dress up as Romans and Celts but they were able to build round houses and villas too. The guides were rightly impressed by, and commented on, the children's historical knowledge of the era. It was a fantastic trip which provided lots of stimulus for learning, the children could make connections easily, especially as such key events in Britain's past were right on our doorstep. #Year4 #wholeschool

Harvest festival

This year we chose to support the local food bank at West Leigh Baptist Church with our harvest collection. The organisers of the foodbank were absolutely overwhelmed with the quantity and quality of our donations. Mr Collins had to make two journeys as his car boot was absolutely full up! These will be used to support local families and individuals who are struggling to make ends meet. We were also visited by Reverend Jon Stannard from the church who spoke to the children in assembly about the reasons we give at harvest time, as well as entertaining us with his guitar playing and singing. Thank you once again for all of your wonderful donations. #year5 #year6 #Year4 #year3 #wholeschool

Year 5 and 6 Football competition

The Year 5 and 6 football team competed in the Southend Primary School Sports Association Boys’ Football Competition on Wednesday 2nd November 2016. The group stage got off to a tense start with all five teams finishing their first game 0-0; the boys had a number of shots at the goal but were unable to hit the back of the net. In the second game after going 0-1 down the boys pushed even harder to get the win with final result being 2-1. This boosted the confidence and energy of the team, helping them achieve an amazing 4-0 win in the third game. In the last game of the group stages the boys pushed hard for a goal, with the game ending in a 0-0 draw. With two games still to be played in the g

Tag Rugby festival

On Thursday 3rd November, a group of year 5 and year 6 pupils attended a tag rugby festival. The purpose of the event was to have the opportunity to apply the skills they learned at tag rugby club in a more competitive situation (and on a pitch which is significantly larger than our Dining Hall)! During the afternoon, they played three matches playing superbly demonstrating great defensive ability and attacking rugby skills. They won all three of their games in great style and thoroughly impressed everyone watching. #Year5 #Year6 #wholeschool
