Tennis Festival
On Wednesday 15th March, West Leigh Junior School held a ‘Mini Tennis Festival’ at Westcliff Lawn Tennis Club. 97 pupils participated in the event and enjoyed an afternoon of tennis. Alongside tennis matches, some pupils also took part in tennis drills and games.
Pupils were arranged into small groups to play ‘round robins’ so that all participants played at least 3 matches. The format of each match was a ‘tie-break’ - the winner being the player to reach 5 points. Throughout the afternoon, there were some extremely close matches.
The pupils with the highest scores after the ‘round robin’ stage then played in knock-out matches at the quarter-final, semi- final and final stage. Again, there were some very close matches, with many players only separated by one point as games finished 5 – 4. The winners of the lower school competitions were Austin Bemister and Martha Green, with Hugo Ventress and Poppy Pringle in silver medal position. In the upper school events, the gold medal winners were Cayden Ovenden and Amelia Dvorakova with Stanley Hill and Anaya Sidhu in the runner up position.
Many congratulations to all the children for demonstrating excellent tennis skills, great sportsmanship and for being superb ambassadors for the school. Thank you to the parents, grandparents and carers who supported the event. Finally, thank you to Graham Boosey, and his team of tennis helpers, and the members of Westcliff Lawn Tennis Club who helped in the smooth running of the event.
