Year 6 Ilam Hall

On a cloudless Monday morning 107 very excited children set off on their three coaches to Ilam Hall Youth Hostel. The weather forecast of a week of wall to wall sunshine stayed true to its word. Not a cloud was seen in the sky so sunhats, sun screen and endless drinks of water were the order of the day! Following a five hour journey the children needed to burn off some energy; we hiked from the youth hostel across the fields into Dovedale. After a much deserved ice cream we walked along the river, across the stepping stones and around Thorpe Cloud. Everyone was amazed by the beautiful countryside and lack of human civilisation. Tuesday began with a hearty cooked breakfast after which the children left to explore the Blue John Caverns and hike up Mam Tor with a walk along the mountain ridge overlooking the start of the famous Pennine Way. The first half of Wednesday was spent visiting Chatsworth House. Highlights were finding their way in (and out!) of the maze and ‘paddling’ in the water cascades! The other half was cycling along the Tissington Trail (once the London to Manchester Railway Line). Thursday was our day at Alton Towers and excitement and anticipation ensured energy levels remained at 100%. Children headed for their favourite rides: Oblivion, Nemesis, Smiler, Galactica, Thirteen … all discussed many times over throughout the evening! And finally came Friday. Cases were packed and rooms emptied. What a fantastic week – exciting activities, delicious food, brilliant weather, amazing scenery - but most importantly friendships were formed and memories made. Well done Year 6 – you were a credit to West Leigh and to your families!
