SPSSA Table Tennis competition
The first Southend Primary School Sports Association (SPSSA) competition of the year took place at Thorpe Hall School on Friday 24th September. Eight pupils from West Leigh Junior School took part in the ‘table tennis’ competition.
In the boys’ competition, the children from West Leigh achieved a 100% record of success in the three group stage matches. This meant that they finished top of the group and progressed to the semi-final. At this point the competition became far harder and the games were extremely close and exciting. West Leigh managed to win through to the final, 3 games to 1, often having to work back from being behind! Their resilience and determination shone through. In the final, the children put up a great battle, but eventually took second place, by 1 game to 3, to Earls Hall.
In the afternoon the girls’ competition took place. Five local schools entered the event and the competition was run as a ‘round robin’. The children from West Leigh again competed with great determination and managed to convincingly win all of their matches bar one, against Earls Hall, which meant that they too achieved second place.
As a result of achieving second place both teams will progress to the Essex School Games competition to be held in October. What a fantastic achievement! Of equal merit is the fact that all of our pupils displayed excellent manners, sportsmanship and supported their team members throughout the competition.
