Yr 5/6 Girls' football tournament


The Year 5 and 6 girls' football team competed in the Southend Primary School Sports Association Girls' Football Competition on Friday 18th October 2019. The day started off with the group stage where the girls got off to a great start by winning the first match. The team then faced two very tough matches managing to win their second match and followed that up with a draw in the last match of their group. West Leigh 2-0 Hamstel West Leigh 3-2 St Marys West Leigh 0-0 Temple Sutton They then went through to the super eights as winners of their group. After a short break, they had three more very closely matched games to play. The team once again got off to a good start winning the first match. They then worked very hard in the second match, getting a couple of shots at goal, but were unable to get past the keeper and in the closing minutes of the game were unfortunate to concede a goal. They continued to push to get a goal to equalize but were unable to with the match ending in a loss. The girls put this result behind them and focused on the next match. Keeping their heads held high and full of confidence and energy, they managed to win. West Leigh 3-0 Eastwood West Leigh 0-1 Fairways West Leigh 1-0 Edwards Hall Finishing on equal points with Fairways, the girls were runners up of the group. In the semifinal, they played Chalkwell Hall. This was a very evenly matched game with the team working tirelessly throughout but Chalkwell found a gap and managed to get past our keeper early in the match. The team had to work even harder to find some space managing to get the ball up the pitch but were unfortunate not to score. In the closing stages of the match, Chalkwell managed to score again. The girls put in a fantastic effort throughout the game and still had one match to go: the third/fourth playoff. West Leigh 0-2 Chalkwell In the third/fourth playoff, the girls played Prince Avenue. Once again, the team put the result of the last game behind them and demonstrated great determination to go home with a medal. With some superb passes and linked up play, they managed to score two tremendous goals to win this match. West Leigh 2-0 Prince Avenue The girls did a fantastic job to finish third out of the seventeen schools that took part in this tournament. The whole team put in an incredible performance throughout the day with superb sportsmanship and behavior and should feel confident when approaching their upcoming league fixtures.
