Tennis Festival

To coincide with the Wimbledon Championships, West Leigh Junior School held a ‘Mini Tennis Festival’ at Westcliff Lawn Tennis Club on Wednesday 10th July. The tournament was run by head coach, Graham Boosey, as part of the LTA Team Challenge initiative.

An amazing 97 children from the school enjoyed an afternoon of tennis. Pupils were arranged into small groups to play ‘round robins’ so that all participants played at least 2 or 3 matches. The winner being the player who reached 7 points first. Throughout the afternoon there were some extremely close matches and it was lovely to see pupils supporting their peers and good play.

The pupils with the highest scores after the ‘round robin’ stage then played semi- final and final matches. Again, there were some close matches, with many players only separated by one point. The winners of the year 3 competitions were Molly Lakeman and Charlie Glenister, with Boe Baxter and Felix Mismar in runner up positions. In year 4, first places went to Thea Hawkins and Harry Hruska, with Annalise Burrows and Oscar Chalmers as runners up. The year 5 winners were Rae Wheatley and Milo Bilanges, with Lois Kinsler and Olly Green in second position. Finally, the year 6 winners were Hannah Rosewell and Archie Jeacock, with Maya Sinclair-House and Ashton Sully taking the runner up medals.

Many congratulations to all the children from West Leigh for demonstrating excellent tennis skills, super sportsmanship and for being great ambassadors for the school. Thank you to the parents, grandparents and carers for supporting the pupils and to Graham Boosey and the members of Westcliff Lawn Tennis Club for helping to organise the event.
