The Role of the Local Governing Board

West Leigh Junior School is part of the Portico Academy Trust.  The trust presently consists of West Leigh Junior School, Porters Grange Primary School and Nursery (a sponsored academy), Friars Primary School and Nursery, Hamstel Junior School and Hamstel Infant School and Nursery.

The Trust was formed to support and challenge, within a context of partnership, high expectations and professional integrity, schools with primary pupils.  Within a core of commonly held beliefs, we hold that each school in the Trust will retain its individual identity and character.

Cheryl Woolf is the appointed CEO of the Portico Academy Trust. There is also a Headteacher’s Steering Committee and several working groups that have been formed to share good practice across all of the school.

The local governing board (LGB) continues to hold responsibility for the success of the school in meeting the needs of its stakeholders - pupils, central government, the local authority (LA), parents and staff, as well as being a key part of the local community, whilst reporting in to Trustees on a regular basis.

The formation of the LGB has not change at West Leigh Juniors, following conversion to Academy and there continue to be four categories of Governors: Parent Governors; LA appointed Governors; Staff Governors, and co-opted Governors.  Meetings of the full GB are held in the mornings twice a term, and focus individually data and finance, on a half termly basis.    Staff and parents are elected to become a governor, co-opted Governors are recruited based on their skills and/or experience.

There are limits on the numbers of each type of governor and so a vacancy must become available before an appointment can be made.  The government is keen to engage people from a professional background in school governance, but this need not put off anyone from applying. A very important point is that the LGB acts as one unit - once a decision is made everyone on the GB is expected to support it even though they might not agree.
