Essex Tag Rugby Finals

Once again, after winning the Southend Finals in October, West Leigh attended the Essex Tag Rugby Finals (for a 13th successive year!) For many of the squad, it was an opportunity to improve upon their efforts in the Essex Finals last year when they finished in a highly respectable 3rd place. Could they improve upon that? Amongst the top 16 schools from all over Essex, it was not going to be easy! During the morning of the competition, the aim was to enjoy attacking rugby but also work upon their defensive skills even managing to put into practice visualisation techniques as used by professional sports psychologists, resulting in a highly successful morning. West Leigh 9-5 Janet Duke West Le

Walk IT training

Year 5 is an exciting year for our children as they have earned the trust and display the maturity required to walk to school on their own: a level of independence they desire and that we, at school, advocate. In order to support this, the children have all taken part in ‘Walk It’ training. During the morning, representatives from Southend Borough Council provided the children with both practical and classroom based sessions so that they were well equipped for walking independently. Walking around our local area and quizzing the children on their knowledge, it became clear that many of them were ready for their next step whilst others are continuing to develop their awareness. We hope yo

Portico Football Festival

On Tuesday 2nd April, 20 boys travelled to Hamstel Junior School to play in the Portico Football Festival. The boys were split into two teams with five games to play and each being ten minutes one-way. All the boys were very excited, full of enthusiasm and eager to be playing football. Both teams performed superbly: demonstrating great skill and taking the opportunity to play in different positions. Every team demonstrated outstanding sportsmanship and respect to all involved. It was a brilliant event and a fantastic opportunity for the boys to play football with other schools.

Hi 5 Netball Competition

On Wednesday 3rd April, three year 6 boys and six year 6 girls played in the Hi 5 Netball competition at Garons. Our first game against Friars we won 3-0, our second game against St George’s we also won 3-0 and finally in our group we beat Bournes Green 5-2. We re-grouped and went through as winners of our group. We then played Friars again beating them 5-0, we then went on to play Greenways and won 6-2. We then had to beat Temple Sutton to win the competition (they have won this competition for the past five years!). We held our nerve and with every child having to play every position in Hi 5, we managed to beat them this year 2-1. Well done to all the children who all played a part in br

Year 4 assembly

We used our theme of Don’t Forget Your Passport as the central theme for our presentation to parents. The idea was to take our travellers on a tour of the four countries we have studied this term. This meant they flew on West Leigh Airlines to Finland where a performance of the Moomins was enjoyed. Moving on our sightseers saw Paris in all it’s glory. Eventually our intrepid travellers managed to climb the Eiffel Tower and discovered the delights of French cuisine! As the journey moved on to Spain we questioned Bull fighting and the excitement of throwing tomatoes at each other before being treated to some Spanish dancing. The final leg of the tour took us to Pompeii in Italy where we di

Windmill Theatre Sessions

To help enrich the children’s learning of their Fragile Earth topic and further their current knowledge, each class took part in a half-day session with the Windmill Theatre group. These sessions included a range of activities that helped the children build their confidence and work closely as a team. They used their voices and actions to recreate a natural disaster and then learnt lines and movements to generate a class performance to music. This display demonstrated their thoughts and feelings on how they would react when sending out aid after a natural disaster had occurred. The children greatly enjoyed this chance to work closely together, develop their drama skills and learn a little mo

Girls Southend Primary School Football Association 6-a-side Football Tournament

On Saturday 30th March, the girls’ football team competed in the Southend Primary School Football Association 6-a-side Football Tournament at Fairways Primary School. The morning started with the group stages. With two games to play, each half was 10.5 minutes each way. The girls’ first game was against Prince Avenue where they got off to a good start demonstrating control and awareness helping them to make great runs and find space on the pitch. They also managed to get a couple of shots at goal and the first match finished West Leigh 1-0 Prince Avenue. The girls then played Fairways A where they demonstrated strong defensive skills and great saves from the keepers but were unfortunat

Year 5/6 Aquathlon

On Wednesday 27th March, 8 children from Year 5 and 6 took part in the Southend Aquathlon at Garon Park. The event consisted of a 100m swim followed by a 1.2km cross country race. The children began with their swim in the pool and put in some fantastic performances. The faster the time they swam, the more of a head start they would gain for the 1.2km race. Every second counted! As they were lined up in positions for the race, it was clear to see that the West Leigh team had strong swimmers to gain the places but the team event then came down to the placings after the run. Considering the children had just swum 100m, the determination on their faces was clear as they began their race and chas
