Southend Week 2018

This year, our action-packed week was made even more special due to fantastic weather and a wonderful group of children who were intent on making the most of every moment! On Monday, we took the train up to London and had a brilliant river cruise with the best commentator ever – he shared all of the river’s secrets with us and kept us interested all the way to Greenwich. Once there, we raced under the river through a ‘secret tunnel’ then spontaneously re-enacted “Andy’s coming!” on the grass – passers-by probably thought there had been a Zombie attack! This started a theme which carried on throughout the week and showed what a ‘connected’ group they had already become. We then climbed the h

Ilam Hall 2018

On a cloudless Monday morning 107 very excited children set off on their three coaches to Ilam Hall Youth Hostel. The weather forecast of a week of wall to wall sunshine stayed true to its word. Not a cloud was seen in the sky so sunhats, sun screen and endless drinks of water were the order of the day! Following a five hour journey the children needed to burn off some energy; we hiked from the youth hostel across the fields into Dovedale. After a much deserved ice cream we walked along the river, across the stepping stones and around Thorpe Cloud. Everyone was amazed by the beautiful countryside and lack of human civilisation. Tuesday began with a hearty cooked breakfast after which t

NSPCC Sponsored events

On Wednesday 20th and Thursday 21st June, we invited a member of the NSPCC into school to hold a number of assemblies and workshops about the work of this important charity. This culminated in a whole school sponsored event on Friday June 22nd, where classes organised a range of events to raise money. The school was buzzing with excitement as water fights and water bombs erupted across the playground whilst other classes held dancing and skipping challenges, dodgeball tournaments, races dressed in pyjamas and mental maths challenges, to name but a few. All the children played a big part in organising events for their classes and some even set up their own fruit and cake stalls to raise furth

Tennis Festival

To coincide with the Wimbledon Championships, West Leigh Junior School held a ‘Mini Tennis Festival’ at Westcliff Lawn Tennis Club on Monday 9th July. The tournament was run by head coach, Graham Boosey, as part of the LTA Team Challenge initiative. 54 children from the school enjoyed a full afternoon of tennis. At any time there were up to 12 matches taking place. Pupils were arranged into small groups to play ‘round robins’ so that all participants played at least 3 matches. The winner being the player who reached 10 points first. Throughout the afternoon there were some extremely close matches. The year 6 competition was decided on points from the ‘round robin’ match play, Congratulatio

Super sports

On Tuesday 3rd July, 12 children attended the Super Sports track event at Garon Park. Southend. These are all of the children that came 1st or 2nd at the Borough Sports competition. The standard is extremely high; Our Year 5 boys came 2nd in their relay final and Ted Thomas won his 600m race making him the Year 5 Southend Borough Champion. On Wednesday 4th July 9 children from the Borough Sports field events were again in competition at Garons, with many of the children placing in their events; rounders ball throw, javelin and long jump. Well done to all those children who tried their best and represented the school brilliantly. #Year6 #Year5 #Year4 #Year3 #Sport #Wholeschool
