12 people, people smiling, people standing, grass, child, outdoor and nature]Once again, after winning the Southend Finals in October, West Leigh attended the Essex Tag Rugby Finals (for a 12th successive year!) In preparation for the event, the squad trained diligently and were ready for the original date (March) until the weather led to it being postponed. In the period between that date and the new date, unfortunately two of the players suffered injuries leading to significant changes needing to be made to the squad. Hi 5 Netball competition

On Wednesday, 6 Year 6 girls and two Year 6 boys attended Garon Park to play in the Hi 5 netball competition. There were 10 teams in total and we played every other school. The game consists of every team member playing every position and scoring, time keeping and centre pass marking when not playing. Our results were as follows: Barons Court won 2-1 St Mary’s won 4-0 Porters won 5-0 Greenways won 1-0 Friars won 3-0 Bournes Green won 2-1 Bournemouth Park 7-0 St. George’s won 8-0 And finally the only game we lost all day was against Temple Sutton 6-1. Science Day

We celebrated British Science Month with a day of experiments, learning and practical activities. We welcomed visitors from our fantastic parent community into school throughout the day. Mr Hawkins came and wowed Years 3 and 5 with his knowledge of space, stars and the solar system. The children asked some fantastic questions and were keen to further their learning in this area. Mr Bilanges demonstrated how to extract DNA from a strawberry which impressed both the staff and pupils! Mr Knight showed the children how to make carbon dioxide, hydrogen and oxygen – a highlight was popping the hydrogen bubbles with a lighted taper! Girls football vs. Chalkwell Hall

On Thursday 29th March, Mr Nash and Mrs Mitchinson travelled to Chalkwell Park with the girls’ football team to play their last league game of the season. With the rain starting to fall, the girls got off to a good start by maintaining possession of the ball and moving up the pitch, they managed to score two goals in the first half. Chalkwell managed to get the counter attack and get a shot at goal, with it bouncing of the post onto the crossbar and just over the line, with the first half finished the score was West Leigh 2-1 Chalkwell. Portico Football Festival

On Monday 26th March, Mr Nash and Mrs Denison travelled to Hamstel Junior School with 10 boys’ to play in the Portico Football Festival. The boys were very excited and full of enthusiasm to be playing football. The boys got to play 3 matches with each match 7 minutes each way. They all performed brilliantly and encouraged each-other throughout the games. The boys showed superb sportsmanship and respect throughout, with a few of the boys volunteering to help make up the numbers for another schools team. It was a brilliant event and a fantastic opportunity for the boys to play football with other schools.

Year 6 Boys' Football Festival at Earls Hall

On Thursday 22nd March, Mr Nash and Miss Fletcher travelled to Earls Hall Primary School with 10 boys’ to play in inter-school football friendly festival. The boys played two 30 minute games, 15 minutes each way, with Chalkwell and Earls Hall. For some of the boys this was their first football match against another team and for all of them this was the first time they had played together as a team. They all worked incredibly hard throughout both games, showing great team work. Each member of team thoroughly enjoyed themselves and was a great experience, they also showed great sportsmanship throughout.

Boys football v Bournemouth park

On Monday 19th March, Mr Nash and Miss Fletcher travelled to Bournemouth Park Primary school with the boys’ football team to play their last league game of the season. In the first half, Bournemouth Park managed to get two goals past our keeper. With a few minutes to go before the half time whistle the boys managed to bring the score to, West Leigh 1-2 Bournemouth Park. In the second half the boys found their feet and managed to score a superb goal from long range on the right, across the goal and into the bottom left corner, bringing the score to 2-2.
