Christmas sing along

As always, we had a wonderful time this afternoon rounding off the autumn term at our Christmas sing along.

Christmas Dinner

Last week the children enjoyed their annual Christmas dinner, served by the West Leigh Junior Office staff. We made sure we took lots of photos of the children getting into the Christmas spirit.

Christmas Carol Church Service

Over 200 children from West Leigh Junior School presented an outstanding celebration of Christmas at their annual Carol Service at St Margaret’s Church. Pupils from every class told the Christmas story in words and song to a huge congregation of staff, family and friends. Alex Blackstone-Cobbe set the tone of the evening with a superb solo verse introducing ‘Once in Royal David’s City’ which is the traditional way to begin our Christmas service. The Boys’ Choir sang ‘ Christmas Songs of Joy’ and ‘Glory to God in the Highest’ whilst the Girls’ Choir treated us to ‘Scots Nativity’ and ‘I believe in Christmas’. Congratulations to all our professional readers, ably coached by Mrs Burt. Thank yo

Carol Singing at Leigh Station

Singers from West Leigh Junior School joined volunteers from the Southend Blind Welfare Organisation for a heart-warming session of carol singing at Leigh Station recently. Following the great success of last year’s event, we were delighted to be invited back to entertain the commuters for a second year. Sharing some of our music-making to generate some festive goodwill always feels really good so we were pleased to represent our school. The main aims were to have fun and to help raise lots of money. I am very pleased to report that this year’s total was over £600! Thank you to our two teams of singers who showed great determination during a long stint of singing in a chilly location. Well d

Christmas decoration day

Our annual Christmas decoration mornings were a great success this year. The children worked with their family members to create beautiful Christmas decorations which can be viewed in all the classrooms – walking through the school is simply wonderful! Many people commented on the festive atmosphere and the mornings were enjoyed by staff and pupils alike. Thank you to all members of our parent community who came and supported this event. We know that the children love welcoming you into their classrooms.

Santa Netball

On Wednesday 5th December, 8 year 6 girls were invited to play in a friendly netball tournament at Alleyn Court school. We played Temple Sutton, Blenheim, Earls Hall and Alleyn Court schools. The girls enjoyed the afternoon and were warmed by the hot chocolate and cookies which were served to us at the end. #year6

Year 3 visit Colchester Zoo

Throughout November Year 3 had the fantastic opportunity of visiting Colchester Zoo as part of their topic on Amazing Animals. During their visit, they had the opportunity to wander the zoo and see all the animals. The highlight for many was when we were picked up by an elf that had lost Santa’s magic flying dust to make the reindeers fly! They thought they had found another animal that could possibly make Santa’s sleigh fly and took us to their enclosure. We ended up at the Penguin enclosure and learnt lots about them and that they don’t actually fly but we needed to check with a zookeeper who brought some friends with her! Her friends were some Little Penguins. All the children loved meeti

Year 5/6 Girls Essex Finals

On Wednesday 22nd November, the Girls’ football team traveled to Melbourne Park in Chelmsford, to compete in the Essex County Schools FA Under-11s Girls’ 7-a-side Cup. The competition brought together the best teams from all over Essex, so the standard of competition was always going to be high. With 7 games to play, each game being 7 minutes one way, the girls played incredibly throughout the day. The girls also had a extra challenge on their hands with the strong wind blowing the ball around the pitch, which unfortunately for them in the first game Tanys Dell Primary managed to get the ball passed our defenders and across the goal, with the wind blowing it across the line. The girls rem

Year 5/6 Dodgeball competition

On Wednesday 29th November the school dodgeball teams travelled to Garons Tennis and Leisure Centre with Mr Nash and Miss Fletcher to take part in a multi-school dodgeball event. The day was split into two parts with one team attending the festival in the morning and the other team attending in the afternoon for a competitive tournament. In the morning the festival team had the opportunity to play a number of dodgeball games with a range of different schools. This enabled them to improve their dodgeball skills throughout the morning and all the children attending really enjoyed the occasion. It was great to see so many schools enjoying playing each other and the West Leigh children were a
