Year 5 visit Anglo Saxons village

As part of our work on the Anglo Saxons this term, Year 5 visited West Stow near Bury St.Edmund’s on Wednesday the 25th of May. The children spent the day visiting the replica huts to learn about the culture, the construction of the buildings and their various uses. The people at West Stow had built many replicas of the various buildings, such as the Great Hall which was used for meetings and feasts, the workshop, the sunken house and various family dwellings. The huts were built based on the archaeologist evidence found on the site, which meant that the children were actually stepping in the same footsteps as the Anglo Saxons were over 1500 years ago! Some children took the time to sketch

Tennis Festival

Four pupils from year 6 took part in the Southend Schools Tennis Festival at Garon Park on Friday 20th May. They made a fabulous start, winning the group stage of the competition with relative ease, dropping only a couple of games. Their strength continued to show in the quarter and semi final rounds as they made their way into the final. The final against a strong team from Thorpe Hall was a tense affair. The children played some outstanding tennis and persevered to the end, eventually winning by three matches to one. This great result takes them through to the Essex finals in mid June. Throughout the competition the children were extremely supportive of one another and applauded good play

Year 5 Raiders and Traders presentation

On Thursday 19th and Friday 20th of May, Year 5 performed their play entitled ‘Raiders and Traders’ to parents and the school. It was definitely a variety performance as both audiences were treated to singing, dancing, choral speaking and a live broadcast from the Anglo Saxon burial site – Sutton Hoo! The children thoroughly enjoyed telling the story about the first invasion of the Anglo Saxons up to the arrival of the Vikings. The dancing reflected the many battles which went on during that era and the choral speakers recited a poem entitled – ‘The Battle of Hastings’ Our thanks to the Year 5 staff and Mrs Graham for her assistance with the choreography. #year5 #Wholeschool

Junior Bikeathon

On Sunday 15th May, 166 children from West Leigh Junior School participated in the Junior Bikeathon. The event was hosted by Bloodwise (formerly Leukemia & Lymphoma Research) who work hard to develop new ways to beat all the different types of blood cancer. This was a record-breaking number of children from our school who attended and both Mr Loveridge and Miss Jones were absolutely delighted and proud of the effort every child put in. Sponsorship money is still being collected in for each lap completed by the children and we are hoping that those donations continue to help in the fight against cancer. #year4 #Year5 #Year3 #Wholeschool #Year6

Quiz club semi finals

On Friday April 29th, the West Leigh Juniors quiz team took part in the semi-final of the Quiz Club National General Knowledge Championship at White Court School in Braintree against nine other schools from the South East of England. The team started off really well and were competing for the lead at the start of the competition. Some of the questions were incredibly difficult - certainly too hard for most of the adults present to answer! By the end of the competition, the team had made a very good account of themselves against some extremely high quality opponents. It was very nerve-wracking for all the parents and other relatives that had come to support and we thank them all for taking th
